Technology Spotlight Spotlight on Screen Readers for People with Low Vision Imagine navigating a website, reading an online magazine, or checking your emails… without ever seeing the screen. For millions of visually impaired people, this is a daily reality made possible by screen reader software. What is a screen reader? A screen reader converts text and visual elements on a screen into speech or braille. This allows users to “read” digital documents, websites, or apps without relying on sight. Some of the most well- known screen readers include JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver (Apple), and TalkBack (Android). 18

How does it work? Screen readers analyze the screen and interpret the information—text, buttons, menus, and sometimes even images. They then deliver it via audio or a braille display. Users navigate using a keyboard, voice commands, or an adapted touchscreen. In recent years, artificial intelligence has taken this even further: some applications can now automatically describe images and make navigating complex documents much more intuitive. Why it matters These technologies open up digital access that was previously very limited for visually impaired users.
