1 RUNWAY \ BOOKS WORDS: CANDICE DE BEER READ THIS THE LATEST BOOKS FROM AND ABOUT AFRICA 2 THE BREAK LINE James Brabazon, Penguin Michael Joseph, R290 The Break Line is James Brabazon's gripping novel. Officially, Max McLean doesn’t exist. He’s a 40-something intelligence agent who works for the British government. He’s one of their best assets, until he begins to question his orders. After botching a previous mission, he now needs to get back into his superiors’ good graces. This is his last chance. It’s a perilous mission in West Africa, and it’s covert. They're sending him to Sierra Leone to take out an unknown. The previous man they sent, a former comrade-in-arms and the bravest man Max had ever known, went insane. Max wants to know why. Full of intrigue and explosive fight scenes, The Break Line is everything you'd expect from a spy thriller, and more. Max McLean is James Bond, Jason Bourne and Jack Reacher all rolled into one imperfect, yet likable, spy. His brash attitude and theatrics are so compelling that you won't want to put this book down. BORN TO KWAITO: REFLECTIONS ON THE KWAITO GENERATION Esinako Ndabeni and Sihle Mthembu, BlackBird Books, R240 3 Born to Kwaito collection of essays celebrating and interrogating the genre. The book chronicles the history of kwaito music, noting the highs and lows, and tackling its relevance in society today. Ndabeni describes kwaito as a cultural moment that wasn't only “dancing and carefree, it was also laughing in the face of oppression”. It was a means for black youth in townships to express their experiences and celebrate their lives. The book contains candid interviews with Mandla Spikiri, Kabelo Mbalane and Robbie Malinga to name a few. It also looks at how kwaito has influenced other art forms, such as fashion, TV and film. Born to Kwaito is an insightful and informative read, and is certainly worth adding to your bookshelf if you’d like to know more about the genre and subculture it inspired. TUG OF WAR Naomi Howarth, Jacana, R130 Tug of War is a heart-warming tale that follows the story of friendly Tortoise on an adventure to meet and make new friends. Along his journey, he encounters Elephant and Hippo. Because he's different, they refuse to be his friend. At first he is hurt, but after chatting with Bird, he sets out to prove that, despite being small, he has his own bit of brilliance. The moral of the story is to not be judgmental and use hurtful words, something children often do. The eye-catching illustrations are vibrant and engaging, and they bring the wildness IMAGES SUPPLIED and wonder of the African bush to life. Children will have endless fun searching for tiny insects and colourful birds hidden within the pages. It's perfect bedtime reading for your little one. 6 \ fastjet taking you places \ www.fastjet.com october\december 2018

4 RUNWAY \ BOOKS THE MANDALA KITCHEN: 100 RECIPES TO HEAL AND RESTORE YOUR GUT Marlien Wright, Jacana, R330 In our fast-paced lifestyles, especially ones requiring travel abroad often, it’s tempting to live on fast food, as well as processed and refined foods. But could these meals be causing health issues? According to Marlien Wright, a food blogger, nutrition coach and author of The Mandala Kitchen: 100 recipes to heal and restore your gut, it’s most likely. She argues that the secret to a healthy body – feeling good and being able to fight disease effectively – could lie in our gut. While our bodies contain good and bad bacteria, a gut riddled with unnatural bacteria can affect your immune system and ultimately damage your overall health. She explains which foods promote and damage gut health, and provides a collection of delicious, easy and quick recipes to whip up at home for you, your partner and your children. If you experience mood swings, weight gain or you're constantly rushing to a doctor, then perhaps you need to change what you put in your body. Follow Marlien’s food journey and find out more about eating healthily at yogakitchen.co.za MISO SESAME CHICKEN This crowd-pleaser is a time-saver to boot. What's more, it's gut-friendly and even fussy kids will love it. Add the rice vinegar, miso paste, grated ginger and garlic and steamed broccoli, and continue stir-frying for 2 minutes on high. Lastly, stir in the cooked basmati rice until the whole mixture is coated with the sauce. Serve with a sprinkling of lightly toasted sesame seeds. october\december 2018 www.fastjet.com \ fastjet taking you places \ 7

RUNWAY \ TECH A POWERFUL NEW NOTE Bigger than a phone but smaller than a tablet, Samsung’s new phablet is finally here: the Galaxy Note 9. It’s wider and longer than last year’s Note 8 and features an impressive 6.4” Infinity Display and an even more impressive 4 000mAh battery. If your phone doubles up as a camera, the Note 9 has a dual-lens rear camera (and fingerprint scanner) as well as the ability to recognise what you’re looking at, and then optimise your lens settings – think contrast, white balance and exposure – so your photos look even better. Constantly having to delete things off your phone? The Galaxy Note 9 comes standard with 128GB of storage. Problem solved. One of the standout features of the Galaxy Note 9 is the S Pen, which doubles as a remote control. Pop it out and you can use it to control on-screen presentations, take photos and more.
