IN-FLIGHT J ust under three decades ago, Singita’s first lodge was founded in the Sabi Sands Game Reserve. Fast-forward 26 years and the luxurious and environmentally-conscious hospitality group now operates 12 properties in three countries across Africa. Since then, many things have changed and developed – especially in the kitchens of the lodges and camps. Every mealtime at Singita is a masterpiece. Each plate is carefully crafted, ingredients painstakingly prepared, fruit and vegetables freshly harvested where possible, and the utmost care is taken to ensure that every bite is outstanding. It's no surprise to hear that guests frequently compliment the chefs and request recipes for many of the dishes. This is one of the numerous reasons why Singita has published a 274-page cookbook that celebrates its food journey. From Tanzanian specialties like futari (sweet potato, butternut and coconut stew) and South African favourites like malva pudding, to Zambezi beer-battered bream and classics like risotto, the team collected the best recipes from every region. MAPUTO Mozambique’s economic hub and coastal capital is not just a gateway to sun and sea. It's well worth exploring this lively city for a few days. 1 IN-FLIGHT EXPLORE THE CITY Pancho Guedes was arguably one of Maputo’s most famous imports, and the late Portuguese architect sculptured this port's magnificent cityscape. With his eye for design, detail and architectural flow, he conceptualised numerous buildings throughout the city. Join Maputo a 2 Pé for a wonderfully informative walking tour that weaves in the country’s socio-economic and cultural aspects. The tour provides the perfect introduction to the capital. SHOP FOR CAPULANAS, CARVINGS AND CRAFTS Colourful capulanas hang floor to ceiling and wall to wall at Casa Elefante. The store’s reputation precedes it. There's a large variety of goods and a charming mother-daughter team owns this lively establishment. The atmospheric Central Market just across the street (Avenida 25 de Setembro) sells fresh produce, fish and meat. In between the food stalls, you will also find hair products, souvenirs and trinkets. Flex your haggling skills at the FEIMA Curio Market when buying handmade arts and crafts, such as paintings, wooden carvings, JUST 30KM NORTH OF MAPUTO'S batiks and jewellery. CITY CENTRE ARE THE PEACEFUL, GOLDEN BEACHES OF MACANETA WITH ITS LODGES AND RESTAURANTS. THIS PENINSULA CAN BE REACHED BY A FERRY TRIP ACROSS THE INCOMATI RIVER AT MARRACUENE. YOU MAY AS WELL STAY FOR THE WHOLE DAY. 3 MARVEL AT THE TRAIN STATION Some have called Maputo’s main train station (Estação Central dos Caminhos de Ferro) Africa’s most beautiful terminus thanks to its marble pillars, intricate wrought-iron latticework and spectacular facade. Built in the early 20th century in the Neoclassical Beaux- Arts style, its design is often mistakenly attributed to French civil engineer Gustave Eiffel. It's more likely that it was designed by the Portuguese architect José Ferreira da Costa. Visit it for a coffee or 4 lunch, to wander through the rail museum, or simply to marvel at the 51m copper-clad central dome. SWIM AND SUNBATHE AT MACANETA BEACH Just 30km north of Maputo’s city centre are the peaceful, golden beaches of Macaneta with its lodges and restaurants. This peninsula – a thin strip of beach that juts out into the Indian Ocean – can be reached by a ferry trip across the Incomati River at Marracuene. If you're coming all this way, you might as well stay for the whole day – swim in the warm waters, sunbathe on the sand, climb the dunes, go horseback riding and indulge in a seafood feast. 20 \ fastjet taking you places \ www.fastjet.com april\may 2019
IN-FLIGHT 5 BUY THE CATCH OF THE DAY The Fish Market (Mercado du Peixe) is the best place to find the freshest seafood in town. If you don't feel like cooking your purchases at your rented holiday apartment, one of the many restaurants would be more than happy to prepare it for you in a traditional Mozambican way. This is perfect for adventurous travellers, but only because competition is fierce. Merchants will vie for your meticais (Tanzanian 6 shillings) by trying to entice you with bigger prawns, while restauranteurs will lure you with their local peri-peri-inspired recipes. OVERDOSE ON ART The late Alberto Chissano is a household name in Mozambique. The sculptor is known for his works made from wood, iron and stone. His family home, on the outskirts of the city in Matola, has been converted into a gallery with some of his finest pieces on display. Contemporary art lovers will appreciate Núcleo De Arte. This cooperative is home to numerous Mozambican artists who flex their creative muscles in various media. It is part artists’ workshop and gallery and part restaurant – and the perfect place to have a beer with the country’s promising artists. 7 TAKE A SUNSET CRUISE Sip on a Laurentina beer during a three-hour sundowner cruise to Xefina Island, north of the city. From here you can watch the silhouette of Maputo’s skyline as the sun sets. Alternatively, hop aboard a yacht for a day-long seafaring safari from Porto de Pesca, close to Inhaca Island. 8 A seafood lunch follows a snorkelling expedition, with downtime on the beach and boat. DANCE KIZOMBA STYLE Mozambicans are blessed with natural rhythm and they love to dance. Join a group class at Dance Spot (197 Rua da Argélia) with dance instructors Bruno Almeida and Frias Fumo on Mondays to Thursdays. Here, you can learn the slow and sensuous movements that involve coordinated hip rotations between dance partners to the sound of a smooth electronic percussion. Other dance styles include Cuban salsa, swing, tango and Afro house. Every Thursday (between 6 and 10pm), Hotel Pestana Rovuma’s restaurant hosts free dancing socials, where you can practise your new moves. 22 \ fastjet taking you places \ www.fastjet.com april\may 2019
SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL TATTOO CONVENTION TO INK OR NOT TO INK A shared love for tattooing and all things related to the lifestyle and industry was a prominent driving factor for the launch of the South African International Tattoo Convention. WORDS: CLEO BLACK april\may 2019 www.fastjet.com \ fastjet taking you places \ 27
TRAILBLAZING AFRICA T attooing is not what you would call a team sport: artist and canvas are one, sometimes spending hours at a time while a permanent work of art is transferred from mind’s eye to skin. While you might want friends and family clustered around you during the process – to hold a hand or deliver a snack – there are many reasons that this is not feasible for parlours and artists. Unless you have a tattoo, you wouldn’t know too much about the process and might be quite curious. We as artists thought to ourselves, “How can we include moms and dads, siblings, friends and curious little ones in the process without compromising on health or quality? How can we open up our world to people who have never experienced the love that our community has for collecting and making all kinds of artwork on skin?” DIVERSITY AND STYLE Founded in 2016 by Waldo del Rocca, owner of Cape Electric Tattoo in Cape Town, the South African International Tattoo Convention (SAITC) is host to 90 tattooers from as far afield as Italy, Canada, Hong Kong, Poland and Australia. A formidable gathering, the SAITC is an eye-opening and fascinating window into the world of tattooing, with more than 15 styles being represented. One of the main aspects of this year’s convention is highlighting the diversity in the international tattoo industry. People who are not necessarily in close contact with the industry through tattooed friends or relatives might only be familiar with a few of the more well-known styles. In a community which started over 5 000 years ago, there is a wealth of options to be discovered and appreciated. The most familiar styles are American traditional (bold lines and a primary colour palette), western Japanese (classic Japanese imagery with a modern twist and interpretation), black and grey (there are many options within this style which extend to realist portraiture, script and others), and neo traditional (a return to a traditional style and method with modern elements like 3D and brighter colours). Although these styles are the ones that immediately jump to mind when you think about tattoos, there are many more out there. A soft, modern style garnering a lot of attention is watercolour: a seamless blending of a plethora of shades to form not only images but also abstract bursts of colour on the skin. No harsh outlines are used in this style. A much older style of tattooing which has been revived and is gaining traction among tattoo enthusiasts is hand poke tattooing. This is a machine-free style where needles are pushed into the skin by hand to deposit ink. “Across the world the progression of tattooing really parted ways with the more primitive, non-electric forms of tattooing because rituals became less of a focus,” says Jenna Bouma, who specialises in hand poking. Now that younger generations have become curious about tradition and the rituals surrounding ancient methods, the style is making a huge comeback. This method of tattooing is more than 5 000 years old and was used mostly by the early Japanese and Maori tribes to mark their bodies. If flowing colours or the machine-free option are not for you, check out the style of sacred geometry. As the name implies, the style centres around geometric patterns and shapes (often found in nature and referred to as perfect shapes) with extreme attention to detail. For some artists and collectors, there is a Move to a new spiritual significance woven into the art. “Geometric tattooing rhythm. Fly to allows me to work with the form of the body, using patterns to Johannesburg, the accent its shape and curves. I love it because there is a need for city of Gold, with perfection and symmetry,” says artist Jon James Case, who focuses fastjet from Harare mainly on this style of work. 28 \ fastjet taking you places \ www.fastjet.com april\may 2019
SOUTH AFRICAN INTERNATIONAL TATTOO CONVENTION TATTOO WONDERLAND The SAITC is a wonderland of options when it comes to figuring out what style will work best for you. There is no shortage of visual aids at each artist’s booth and there is always someone to talk to about the choice that would best suit you. Visit the SAITC this year to learn more about the art of tattooing, the incredible history behind the expressive form of art, and to explore the wealth of talent that this community has to offer. Check out southafricantattooconvention.com styles BLACK AND GREY BOTANICAL FOR SOME ARTISTS AND TATTOO COLLECTORS, THERE IS A SPIRITUAL SIGNIFICANCE WOVEN INTO THE ART. HAND POKE JAPANESE TATTOO TRENDS As with any creative industry, there are styles which will be in constant and in consistent demand from tattoo collectors who have a good idea of their preferences. There are also several tattoo trends. When choosing a tattoo, it's important to keep in mind that while a certain trend may be all the rage now, your tattoo will be with you forever. Countless tattoo collectors have cover-ups or have removed pieces which were in vogue when they were made, but sadly most trends IMAGES COURTESY IMAGES simply do not last. “The styles which have stood the test of time (and will continue to do so) are the tattoos that have authentic origin, purity in application, and quality of design – just like good music. We don't really believe in defining tattoo trends. In fact, we discourage people SINGLE NEEDLE TRADITIONAL from getting tattoos that are on trend, as these trends pass quickly, like most fashion fads.” says Waldo. april\may 2019 www.fastjet.com \ fastjet taking you places \ 29

TOUCHDOWN 1 SUMMIT KILIMANJARO Africa’s tallest peak and tallest free-standing mountain in the world, Mount Kilimanjaro, is certainly no walk in the park. Several days of extreme hiking will see you walk through several vegetation zones, from forest to highland desert — until you tackle the summit in darkness of your final night, and drag your way up to its peak (at 5 895m above sea level) just in time to take in the most spectacular sunrise you are ever likely to witness. 2 EXPERIENCE THE THRILL OF THE GREAT WILDEBEEST MIGRATION Home to a diverse group of grazers, such as the African buffalo, warthog, giraffe, Grant’s gazelle, eland, and waterbuck, the Serengeti offers wildlife viewing at its best. The main attraction, however, is the annual wildebeest migration. This thrilling event occurs from mid- March through to November, as more than a million wildebeest, along with zebra and eland follow the pattern of rainfall and grass growth. 3 SWIM WITH THE BIGGEST FISHES IN THE SEA Whale sharks, along with green turtles, dugongs and manta rays share celebrity status in the waters surrounding Mozambique. These slow-moving creatures pose no threat and are typically spotted filter- feeding on krill near the surface in the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park and Tofo Beach, just north of Maputo. 4 GO FOR THE KILL AT LAKE MANYARA Referred to by Ernest Hemingway as “the loveliest lake”, Lake Manyara’s famous tree-climbing lions take centre stage on this East African adventure. There are also a record-breaking 500+ species of birds here, including ostriches, raptors and scores of pink flamingos – an iconic image of the lake. During the dry season, the live entertainment is turned up a notch in the early morning and late afternoon as prowling lion, hyena, cheetah and even the more elusive leopard go on the hunt. 5 BUNGEE JUMP IN VICTORIA FALLS Vic Falls, as it's affectionately known, is one of the most impressive and visited tourist attractions in Zimbabwe. And justifiably so – as the sheer volume of water that tumbles over the 1.6km-long cliff into the Batoka Gorge is breathtaking.
